Sudden Hearing Loss And Why You Should Not Wait To Be Evaluated By An Audiologist and ENT Physician

Many people have no idea that sudden hearing loss is considered a medical emergency. Sudden hearing loss or sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is classified as a sudden loss of hearing in one or both ears. Some symptoms that can accompany sudden hearing loss include tinnitus (ringing/buzzing/etc) in the ear, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and dizziness.

The most common cause of sudden hearing loss is usually a viral infection. Patients may or may not feel sick at the time of their sudden hearing loss. Other causes of sudden hearing loss include a blockage of earwax or cerumen, autoimmune inner ear disease, or certain medications such as high doses of aspirin.

As patients are unable to determine the cause of the sudden hearing loss without the help of a professional, this is why it is important to seek medical attention right away in the case of sudden changes in hearing. If sudden hearing loss is truly caused by a viral infection and not something more easily treatable like earwax blockage, then time is of the essence. If sudden hearing loss is treated right away with steroids, then the chances of recovery of hearing back to baseline are much higher than if patients wait too long. The typical timeframe for steroids to be beneficial is usually within 2-4 weeks of onset of the sudden hearing loss. However, many Doctors of Audiology and Ear/Nose/Throat Physicians will work patients in same day for concern of sudden hearing loss as they understand the importance of timely treatment.
