“When you lose your vision, you lose touch with things; When you lose your hearing you lose touch with people.” ― Helen Keller

Signs and Symptoms of Hearing loss

Signs and Symptoms of Hearing loss:

  • Asking people to repeat themselves often
  • Difficulty following conversations that involve more than two people
  • Thinking that others are mumbling or speaking quietly
  • Difficulty hearing speech in noisy situations
  • People commenting about how loud your TV or radio is
  • Inappropriate responses during conversation
  • Stress from straining to hear what others are saying
  • Withdrawing from enjoyable social situations more often
  • Family history of hearing loss
  • Taking medications that can harm the hearing system
  • Diabetes, heart, circulation, or thyroid problems
  • History of exposure to loud sounds

Hearing loss is usually gradual, and by identifying these symptoms, you’ve covered step one in the diagnosis process.  However, only an accurate hearing exam can accurately confirm if you are having difficulty with specific sounds or if your hearing as a whole is suffering.  Contact our office to schedule an exam if you have identified one or more of these common signs of hearing loss.

Whole-person approach

Your lifestyle and health history play a key role in your evaluation and communication assessment.  Hearing health can be affected by many factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, chemotherapy, and more.  Environmental factors (ie. Noise exposure and smoking/second-hand smoke), also play a role in hearing health.  Did you know that difficulty hearing can even lead to other health complications such as depression and even memory problems?  As a matter of fact, there’s 3x more memory and balance issues with untreated hearing loss  (Source: CDC).

Along with a thorough evaluation, we were committed to offering solutions that enhance your ability to stay connected to the world around you.

You’re not alone—it’s ok to get help

The majority of people with changes in their hearing are under the age of 65.  Structural changes of the inner ear that lead to hearing loss can actually start occurring quite early in life.  Some of these structural changes can be preventable.  Years of listening to loud music or operating noisy equipment without protection, common health conditions, and genetics can all impact the ability to hear.

We encourage you to bring a spouse, family member, or friend to your appointment with you as improved hearing is most effectively accomplished as a team effort.

Hearing Health Awareness

Our parents taught us to brush our teeth twice a day and see our Dentist regularly.

Our parents taught us to wear sunglasses and see an Eye Doctor, if needed.

But, there is a good chance that your parents did not teach you to wear hearing protection or to see an Audiologist.

Hearing awareness, education, and hearing loss prevention are of utmost importance to us!  We hope to share our knowledge and passion with you and your family.
